“World Cup” Trophy Drives Performance Culture in SAM

Any victory is a little sweeter (and the competition hotter) when there’s a trophy involved. That’s why in 2010 the South America Division brought back their popular “SAM World Cup” competition, giving a quarterly recognition to the rig team that puts in the best performance across a variety of criteria (safety, customer satisfaction, downtime, etc.).

To start off 2011, Transocean’s semisubmersible Transocean Driller earned the trophy for having the South America (SAM) division’s strongest results in the first quarter. The Sedco 706, Celtic Sea, the Sedco 710 and Deepwater Navigator earned the SAM Cup for their performances in 2010.

For Billy Stewart, Celtic Sea Rig Manager, Performance, the award is a matter of pride for the team. “We work hard to achieve results that make our unit stand out. The trophy represents our team’s commitment to achieving our company’s vision.”

All of the division’s rigs compete for the SAM World Cup trophy in a friendly spirit, but the will to win is strong and drives all to strive for an enhanced performance. This includes the Rig Managers, who are in charge of compiling regular performance summaries based on data, reports and customer feedback. The rigs are allotted a certain number of points for meeting various performance criteria – and the rig with the most points wins.

In addition to the trophy, the winning rig receives a prize of $4,000 USD. A quarter of this money must be donated to the rig team’s charity of choice, with the remaining 75 percent used to purchase items for the crew to use on the rig. A great idea from the SAM team, and good luck to all of the rigs vying for the trophy in 2011!
