Introducing “People Focus: Face 2 Face” Offshore Training Program


Face2FaceAs you know, today’s highly competitive industry challenges us on two fronts related to our people: 1. developing them faster than ever, and 2. keeping them here!

This makes it critical for our offshore people managers to have the skills they need to maximize the performance of their co-workers, and help them stay motivated and satisfied here. Our brand-new “People Focus: Face 2 Face” program was developed with this in mind, and is an exciting new tool for our offshore employees.

“Inspirational leaders bring out the very best in their people – whether it’s an employee or a star athlete – and motivate them to go above and beyond what they ever thought they could,” said Steven Newman, President and CEO. “But they’re not born that way! They all have learned to apply tried and true development, coaching and mentoring, and communication techniques that really work – and that’s what you will take away from our People Focus programs.”

Initially the workshops will be offered to senior supervisors (OIM, Senior Toolpusher, Toolpusher, Master, Barge Supervisor, Barge Master, Maintenance Supervisor, Chief Engineer and select others), the program is expected to expand to other rig supervisor positions mid/late 2012. The program consists of four modules, completed over approximately six months:

“The workshops are intended to be highly experiential to ensure employees enjoy the learning, practice with new tools and techniques in a safe environment and share experiences and results,” said Paul Rutherford, Manager Global Talent Management, who helped develop the program along with consultancy Meta-Lucid. “This is not a program where you sit in a classroom looking at PowerPoint slides for days on end!”


The course will be included on the 2011 Worldwide Training Matrix. While actual courses will commence at the training centers in Singapore, Houston, Macae and Aberdeen as of May 31, 2011, you can book your slot for “People Focus: Face 2 Face” via GMS starting now!


To date, pilot courses for workshop 1 have been held in Houston, Kuala Lumpur and Aberdeen with a total of 30 participants. Thanks to the participants who attended these workshops and provided valuable feedback on the content and exercises.

The same group of employees will be invited back in April and July to participate in a pilot for Workshop 2, again providing their valuable feedback.

“People Focus: Face 2 Face” complements our “People Focus: Managing for Perfomance” program for shore-based management (pay grades 24 and above), along with the “Rig Manager Perfomance” program. All have been aligned to ensure consistency across the company.
