DEN Captain Joins Effort to Drill Water Well in Guatemala

For Jonathan Lenters, Captain on the drillship Discoverer Enterprise, a passion and commitment to overcoming challenges doesn’t only apply to his time working on the rig. This January, during his time off, he journeyed to La Vista, Guatemala (near Quetzaltenango), where he and members of his Colorado church partnered with Living Water International to drill a water well that will provide clean water for years to come.

“Jonathan is a truly dedicated individual at work and at home,” said Randy Sivils, Rig Manager Performance.

Jonathan assisted with setting up the rig, mixing mud, drilling, setting casing, and completing the well. The job was completed in five days, incident-free.

Although the little trailer LS300 drilling rig wasn’t much compared to the DEN, said Jonathan, the team camaraderie was very similar to his experience offshore.

“Just like on the rig, we all had to help each other accomplish our goal,” he said. “We treated each other like family.”

In addition, his experience in offshore drilling helped the other 12 volunteers better understand the process and jargon.

“The water well drilling had the same systems, but on a very basic scale,” he said. “It was great to tend the mud pits, pull the slips, dope the pipe, make connections, break connections and drill for a community who understood the need for clean water. I was excited to be able to take my familiarity with the process and serve a need to the village.”
