Cairo Employee Gihan Awwad Wins Rig Naming Contest

Transocean Honor |
With more than 3,000 employee suggestions to choose from, a Transocean executive committee selected “Transocean Honor” as the name of our new jackup drilling rig.
The name was first submitted by co-worker Gihan Awwad, an HR Coordinator in Cairo (coincidentally, she’s also a FIRST Excellence Award winner and is featured on page 39), who has won herself a trip to Singapore to attend the rig’s naming ceremony when construction is complete. Gihan will be contacted about the details surrounding the event.
“Many of the entries into the naming contest made reference to the Deepwater Horizon, and it was overwhelmingly apparent that our people wanted the rig name to honor the lives of the crewmembers we so tragically lost,” said Steven Newman, President and CEO. “It’s a reflection of how much our people really care for one another, and our culture of respect.”
Other entries for Transocean Honor (and close variations, such as Honour, Honour the Eleven and Honor XI) were submitted and made the final cut. In the end, it came down to who hit the “submit” button first according to the survey time stamps!
