CAPMlogo03Addressing Deepwater Challenges with CAPM™

New Product Gives Customers Ability to “Bend the Curve” to Reduce Safety Risks and Enhance Operational Results

Transocean has a long history of innovation and excellence in offshore drilling, always striving to come up with new and better solutions for our customers that save them time and money, as well as continually enhance safety performance. Our CAPM™ (Continuous Annular Pressure Management) system is the latest product in our arsenal, which allows deepwater operators to more precisely control wellbore pressures during drilling operations.

CAPMShipAccording to many industry experts, problems related to wellbore pressure can result in downtime that’s estimated to be between 10 and 15 percent of the Exploration and Development drilling cost.

“CAPM was developed to help eliminate these costs through the reduction of operational risks, and give operators the potential to drill wells that are considered ‘undrillable’ today,” said Steve Hand, Director of Performance.

The CAPM concept was born in 2004, and has been developed by a core team of TO professionals – Iain Sneddon, CAPM Team Leader and a former OIM; John Mackay, Senior Operations Advisor and a former OIM; Wade Cornelson, CAPM Senior Supervisor and a former Toolpusher; and project leader Jean-Paul Buisine, Operations Manager. The project has been supported by various departments within Transocean, especially Well Engineering, Technology and Engineering. Thom Keeton (Senior Project Engineer), Tony Reyno (Project Specialist), Greg Williams (Project Specialist, Sandy Black (Subsea Supervisor) and Scott Niven (Project Engineer) also played an important role in the project development. Jasmin Begagic, Business Development Manager for CAPM, recently joined the team to replace Jean-Paul as project manager, and head the effort to commercialize CAPM, which is in the final stages of technical development.

CostRisk22CAPM™ is primarily intended for use in deepwater areas with narrow margins between pore and fracture pressures, but it can also be used in shallow water in High Pressure/ High Temperature (HPHT) applications. Wells drilled in these areas often suffer from lost circulation and well control problems and frequently require additional, unplanned casing strings to mitigate these problems. Wellbore diameter is reduced and occasionally, desired geological targets cannot be reached.

CAPM™ combines a dilution-based, dual-gradient drilling process with a closed circulation system to achieve – among other advantages – drilling operations with enhanced kick detection, improved safety margins and potentially simplified well design.

The CAPM team is in talks with several customers worldwide who have expressed interest in using the system either in whole, for dual-gradient drilling, or in part, for Managed Pressure Drilling operations.
